The organisation’s special focus is on domestic market development and attracting foreign investment in the Indian IT Industry. Set up in 1982 for purposes of scientific, educational and IT industry promotion, MAIT has emerged as an effective, influential and dynamic organisation. Representing actively Hardware, Training, Design/R&D and the associated services sectors of the Indian IT Industry,

MAIT is represented on all concerned Government of India forums and works in close association with the Department of IT, Ministry of Communications & IT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, DGFT, Ministry of Finance, BIS, ESC, NIC, STQC, CII, TEMA, ELCINA, CETMA, etc. for the advancement of the IT Industry in India.

MAIT also recognises the importance of Information Technology Industry growing with sound business relations with the rest of the world. In this direction, MAIT from time to time exchanges delegations and structured information with overseas counterpart organisations – industry data, published reports and newsletters – and encourages cross attending of annual events as a part of its effort to promote international understanding.

MAIT represents 92% of the Hardware Sector (by turnover). MAIT membership comprising Indian and Multinational companies is categorised into Corporate and Affiliate. The Corporate Members are engaged in manufacture of IT products or provide services or in any other closely related IT business and the Affiliate Members support the cause of MAIT. Application of membership is subject to approval of the Executive Council.

• Regional offices in Bangalore and Mumbai take up State level issues in South and Western Regions respectively
